Afghan gangs agree to fight: young asylum seeker stabbed | Abroad

The incidents took place on Monday evening last week. Two groups of Afghan youths had agreed to clash via the social media app TikTok. The place where the fight had to be held was the basketball court behind the Sint-Niklaas station in the Jan Breydelstraat.

The gangs of Afghan young people from Sint-Niklaas on the one hand and from the Ghent region on the other, met shortly before 6 pm. What followed was a group fight using knives and sticks. Ajmal S., one of the participants, was stabbed in the head and chest by an assailant. He was immediately brain dead and would die a day later. The assailant was arrested after an intensive investigation. It is a minor, reports Nieuwsblad.

Challenging video

Ajmal S., like a number of other Afghans present, stayed in the Sint-Niklase asylum center of the Red Cross. “We deeply regret what happened that evening and sympathize with the affected family,” said spokesman Jan Poté of the Red Cross Flanders. “We are fully cooperating with the judicial investigation.”

The reason for the fight is still unclear. According to some participants, it came in response to an earlier, challenging video posted on TikTok. Still others claimed they just “wanted to talk” to each other.

What is certain is that it is not the first time that Afghan youth gangs agree to fight each other in public. That also happened in March of this year in Roeselare. Even then, two groups of Afghan young people between the ages of 15 and 20 clashed with each other. A minor was then stabbed with a hunting knife in the thigh and upper arm.

Ten people were arrested, six of whom were minors. Videos of the fight in Roeselare were subsequently posted on TikTok. That was also the case after the fight in Sint-Niklaas.
