Afghan army to resume offensive against Taliban after attacks | NOW

The Afghan army will resume the offensive against the Taliban. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani reported this during a speech on television on Tuesday.

Ghani has ordered the military to “end the defensive position” and “resume operation against the enemy.”

According to Ghani, the resumption of the offensive against the terrorist organization is necessary to “defend the country, the people and our infrastructure”.

The decision comes just hours after two attacks took place in Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing dozens.

First, shooters opened fire in a maternity hospital in the capital, Kabul. Sixteen people died, including some newborn children. Later in the day, 24 people were killed in a suicide attack at a funeral in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The Taliban denies being behind attacks

The Taliban has emphatically denied being involved in the attacks. The funeral attack was later claimed by the Islamic State.

In February, the United States reached a historic peace deal with the Taliban. It was agreed that if the Taliban did not carry out attacks on Afghan territory, the American troops would leave the country.
