ACCEPTANCE – Ministry of Defence Afghanistan said government forces retook control of the city in the occupied Badghis Province Taliban the day before. The ministry also said that hundreds of troops had been deployed to the city.

Yesterday, the Taliban seized key government buildings in the city, including the police headquarters as part of the dramatic Taliban advance that is taking place as foreign forces withdraw from Afghanistan after 20 years of intervention.

According to the ministry, fighting was continuing on the outskirts of Qala-e-Naw, the capital of Badghis province, which borders Turkmenistan. Also read: Russia admits to being concerned about the development of the situation in Afghanistan

“The city is completely (back) under our control and we are carrying out operations against the Taliban on the outskirts of the city,” said Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Fawad Aman.

Aman, as reported by Reuters on Thursday (8/7/2021), said 69 Taliban members were killed in the operation. “Large quantities of Taliban weapons and ammunition were also seized by government forces,” he said.

The ministry said some areas in Badghis were still occupied by the Taliban. Security officials say the Taliban have seized more than 100 districts in Afghanistan. Also read: Taliban is getting bolder, taking control of important cities in western Afghanistan

The Taliban themselves claim they control more than 200 districts in 34 provinces that cover more than half the country. However, most of the main cities are still under government control.
