Affinity Photo 2: A bloated photo editor that will definitely not disappoint

As a reminder – Affinity Photo is a photo editing software that started life in 2015 in the jersey of Apple computer owners. Because it became a hit very quickly and even won various awards, including Best Photo Editor and Application of the Year, it managed to do something rarely seen – the transition from Mac to Windows. The company Serif, which is behind its development, has undoubtedly done something right.

At the same time, there are not a lot of similar programs for Windows, although even in this software industry, development has slowed down significantly recently. . But with the Photo 2 program, it is clear that we finally have a program that makes the transition from Photoshop easier for both amateurs and seasoned professionals.

Missing archiving

The individual applications that Affinity Photo 2 offers are more than we can mention. The program can handle RAW format editing, PSD format can be exported and imported, we can correct errors caused by optics as well as exposure, masks and layers are not missing. An unexpected feature is the ability to edit images in 360 degrees. A number of steps are non-destructive, modifications using filters can be viewed in real time using the Live filters application.

Affinity Photo is simply a full-blooded photo editor, but if we want to win with archiving, we have to look elsewhere. However, Serif also thought about those who might find it annoying, so we can match the program with some other program that will serve as an external editor.

After all, we can buy the whole package of programs (Photo, Publisher and Designer) at a reasonable price, so everything will be taken care of. Personally, I would welcome an application that allows cataloging.

A replacement for Photoshop?

The interface is relatively intuitive, but the feeling of switching from Windows to Mac will remain with us – those who work with Mac will go from the first moment, orthodox “windows” will fumble for a while. The basic division into five areas called Personas and their other sub-areas is somewhat confusing.

Which photo editor do you use?

The icons are more understandable in the new version than before. Some applications are better and faster than those found in Photoshop, but the Macros application is a bit more complicated.

Can Affinity Replace Photoshop? If we look at the price, which can be the main reason for a large number of users, then it is quite clear. The British company Serif wants 1,790 crowns for Affinity (it’s worth waiting for the occasional discount, the introductory one was even 40%), which is the price for a lifetime license, no begging for monthly fees.

If you would like to buy the whole package, which includes licenses for Mac, Windows, iPads and other applications as well Affinity Designer 2 and Affinity Publisher 2, you pay a total of 4290 crowns. If you are switching from the first version of Affinity Photo to the second, the company offers you a 25 percent discount.

Photoshop still has a much richer range of functions, but what are we going to lie to ourselves about – who really works 100% in Photoshop? With Affinity Photo 2, we get a well-rounded photo editor for little money, which certainly does not disappoint and can do everything we could need. After all, the control doesn’t deny its apple origins.

  • Pro: Speed, robustness, low price
  • Against: We will have to get used to the controls for a while
  • Total: 95 percent
