The first breeding in Béarn which had to undergo the slaughter of all its ducks is that of Château Bellevue, in Baigts-de-Béarn (near Orthez).
On this medico-social complex managed by Adapei des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, around 90 disabled people work in particular in palmiped breeding workshops, in slaughterhouses, and in cannery.
“Saturday we spotted clinical signs on a few ducks: a lack of tonicity, the head that does not hold straight “, explains the director of the complex Stéphane Pontlevoy.
He immediately alerts the veterinary services, which carry out analyzes. Of birds have been infected by the H5N8 avian influenza virus, which has been spreading like wildfire among our neighbors in the Landes for several weeks.
Disinfection of the site in progress
The Bellevue castle, located on the heights of Baigts, is less than two kilometers from the south of the Landes.
The 2,800 ducks from the farm had to be slaughtered, according to the sanitary rules in force. The operations took place this Monday morning, and the disinfection of the entire site is underway.
During the bird flu crisis of 2017, Château Bellevue had already been confronted with the slaughter – preventive this time – of all its palmipeds.
