AFD Politician Wins Mayoral Election in East Germany: A Repeating Pattern?

“Oops! … I Did It Again”, the American pop singer Britney Spears sang in 2000: “Oops! I’ve done it again!” This also applies to many voters in East Germany today – in a figurative sense. Because a week after the lawyer and member of the state parliament Robert Stuhlmann in Sonneberg was the first AfD politician to be elected to a top municipal office, a politician from the stigmatized party again won a mayoral election: the member of the state parliament Hannes Loth defeated in a runoff election in Raguhn-Jeßnitz in Saxony -Anhalt his non-party counter-candidates.

It was still unclear on Sunday whether a “consideration test” would also be ordered for Loth, as for the newly elected but not yet sworn District Administrator Stuhlmann. The Thuringian AfD man is to be checked by the superior authority for his loyalty to the constitution. In fact, the will of the people is made dependent on a kind of TÜV test by the bureaucracy. Even the local CDU showed itself to be a good loser and complained about the actions of the authorities in the federal state, which is led by Bodo Ramelow of the “Left”, i.e. the SED heirs.

The result in the community in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, in which 8,861 people live and around 7,800 were eligible to vote, was close: 42-year-old Loth got 51.13 percent of the votes, his 31-year-old opponent only 48.87 percent. Voter turnout was 61.51 percent. The winner of the election, Loth, grew up in the community and as a farmer, he was manager of an agricultural company before his election to the state parliament.

In the bubbles on social media, the usual insults, as one unfortunately has to say by now, erupted. For example, under an Instagram post about the election on ZDF, voters and politicians from the AfD referred to as “human garbage”.. One could now say: What can ZDF do for commentators? some. Because only recently the broadcaster explained to children why the AfD is bad or right-wing extremist.

A conservative journalist wrote on his Twitter account, apparently as satire: “My family (and we are many!) wanted to spend their well-deserved summer vacation in #RaguhnJessnitz. Now we have to cancel everything & stay at home. All children cry. My wife asks in a trembling voice: ‘WhaRuM?’ – I can only whisper helplessly: ‘Oh my God!’”

It is striking that the waves of scandals on Twitter that are otherwise usual with AfD victories were almost completely absent. As if someone had flipped a lever. Instead of the usual hyperventilation, there was silence.

Of course, one could explain that by the fact that it is not a very large community. But the district of Sonneberg is also the second smallest in Germany, and there the storm of outrage over the first AfD district administrator in Germany was huge. The fact that the party is now also providing a mayor for the first time has great symbolic power – both for supporters and opponents of the AfD. In this respect, a “wave of indignation” would have been expected. Maybe she’ll come too.

In some media, too, the election was casually treated as “also running”. In the digital “Bild” it can only be found in the small print. Others, like the “world,” made it the main story at the top of their website.

The policy of the “fire wall” propagated by the other parties in dealing with the AfD threatens to fail with the successes of the party in the municipal sector. Despite all the assurances of the party leadership, elected representatives from other parties often work together with the AfD. If the AfD seizes its chance, many citizens will no longer see the party as a gateway to hell, but as a pragmatic force. This would further break the dam of stigma.
