Aerosmith Say Goodbye to the Stage, Tyler Without a Voice

End of an era for Aerosmith fans: after more than five decades, the band of Dream On, Love in an Elevator and Janiès Got a Gun has played its last concerts. “Steven Tyler’s vocal cord problems are beyond repair,” the band announced, canceling all other dates still scheduled for what was supposed to be their farewell tour.
“It has been the honor of our lives to have our music be a part of yours,” the group said in a post on social media addressed to the Blue Army (the army of fans). In 2017, Aerosmith had started the Aero-Vederci Baby, a Farewell Tour of those that, in the style of Bob Dylan, never seem to end and that, under the name of Peace Out, was supposed to continue at least until next February with stops in North America and Canada and a grand finale at Madison Square Garden. The news of the cancellation of the remaining scheduled dates came after a series of postponements: in fact, precisely because of Tyler’s health problems, the last time the band had been on stage together was last September in Elmont, in the state of New York.
The decision to end life on the road was “difficult, heartbreaking, but necessary,” made because frontman Tyler, whose voice “is an incomparable instrument,” is still dealing with a fractured larynx he suffered at the end of last September after just three concerts.
“Steven has spent months working tirelessly to get her back to how she was before the injury. We have seen her struggles despite having the best doctors in the field at her side. Unfortunately, it is clear that a full recovery will not be possible,” the band members now said.
Not the only group looking to extend their retirement (besides Dylan, see Elton John, Kiss and the Eagles), Aerosmith was formed in 1970: in addition to Tyler, the group then included Joe Perry, Ray Tabano, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer, with Tabano soon replaced by Brad Whitford. The band won four Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
The announcement that Tyler is no longer touring doesn’t say whether there’s any hope that he’ll recover enough to return to the recording studio, but as Variety noted, Aerosmith hasn’t released an album as a group in over a decade: their last, Music From Another Dimension!, came out in 2012, while Tyler released one solo in 2016.
