An attempt by the largest Russian airline, Aeroflot, to circumvent Western sanctions and repair its European-made Airbus A330 aircraft in Iran ended in embarrassment.
According to the Aviatorshchina telegram channel, the airliner, which arrived in Tehran on April 5, 2023, will return to Russia not in September 2023, but in March 2024. The reason for such a long delay, “Aviatorschina” did not specify.
Earlier, the general director of Aeroflot complained to journalists that although the airline is satisfied with the quality of repairs in Iran, the contractors are in no hurry.
For the first time in its history, a Russian airline asked the Iranians to perform heavy maintenance on a foreign-made aircraft. Due to Western sanctions, Aeroflot can no longer service American-made Boeing and European-made Airbus aircraft at official service centers.
At the same time, Iran has been under sanctions for decades. During this period, local aviators established channels for the supply of unofficial spare parts and learned how to maintain aircraft on their own.
Airbus A330 of Aeroflot in Tehran is serviced by specialists of the Iranian airline Mahan Air. The air carrier has long-haul Airbus aircraft in its fleet, which include the A330 of Aeroflot.
In May, Mahan Air showed the conditions under which its workers are repairing an Aeroflot aircraft. At that time, the airliner was in a large aviation hangar at the Tehran airport.
