For Aergera Giffers, the first National League A qualification after promotion is slowly coming to an end. With four rounds to go, the gap to the last playoff place is two points. It would have been presumptuous to expect that coach Richard Kaeser’s team could have caught up against the leaders from Zug. The Zug women lead the table with more than three times as many points as Aergera and, in addition to league top scorer Isabelle Gerig, have well-known players such as Corin Rüttimann and Martina Repkova. “Of course I would have liked to score again today – unfortunately it didn’t work out,” said Edmea Stegmaier after the game. The striker knows what it feels like to score against the championship favorites. She had scored 2:10 in the last game between the two teams. But the Eastern Swiss in the service of Aergera didn’t just feel like gloom after the 3:11 defeat. “We scored three goals again and conceded two less. That’s the best we can say after today.”
But not only that, in the second third the Senslers achieved a respectable success. After the opening period, in which Aergera suddenly completely lost the thread and picked up a 0:7 mortgage, Richard Kaeser’s team won the middle third with 3:2.
Four games – at least two points
However, impressive successes in the last four qualifying games are not enough if Aergera Giffers wants to play in the playoffs and at the same time secure early league status. They are currently two points short of eighth place, which entitles them to take part in the playoffs. The remaining opponents with Skorpions Emmental Zollbrück, Piranha Chur, Unihockey Berner Oberland and the Wizards Bern Burgdorf are definitely tough. But coach Richard Kaeser doesn’t want to reveal where he thinks his team is most likely to score points. He remains diplomatic: “We take it game by game, it won’t be easy anyway, so it wouldn’t be appropriate to talk about the playoffs. But we want to score points in every game!”
Aergera’s last performances are encouraging. Aergera won against their table neighbors from Winterthur and the Floorball Riders. The Senslers have also defied Piranha Chur to gain a point so far. If Aergera doesn’t experience a period of weakness over 60 minutes, a lot is possible.
“Ultras” are always there
Especially in top-class sport, where often only points and bare results count, other factors are often forgotten. The village club from Giffers has the highest average attendance in the entire league. And that even though it was clear from the start that Aergera probably wouldn’t be competing for titles. The “Ultras Aergera Giffers” make a significant contribution to the high average audience. The fan group was formed in the 21/22 season. There was a certain amount of hype during the promotion games, explains Sandro Zwahlen from the Ultras Aergera Giffers. The group then made posters and organized flags and drums. Since then, the Ultras have become an integral part of the Giffersner sports hall and ensure a great atmosphere for 60 minutes. “Most of it comes from us ourselves, but the club supports us, for example, in purchasing the drums,” says Zwahlen.
The Ultras owe this to their unconditional support. If possible, you also attend the away games, says Zwahlen. People are willing to pay the price for this. “A good half probably struggle with hoarseness after the day of the game,” says Zwahlen with a laugh.
The family around Aergera Giffers are all fighting together for a place in the playoffs. Aergera still has four games left, their next opponents will be Skorpions Emmental Zollbrück at home on January 27th.
