Arévalo swore in Santiago Palomo this Thursday as the new anti-corruption commissioner, who will be in charge of supervising institutions and prosecuting corruption.
The main purpose of the National Commission Against Corruption (CNC) is to develop mechanisms to prevent and combat corruption within the Executive Branch, as well as to take legal action to recover defrauded public funds.
“We must protect whistleblowers from acts of corruption. Currently Guatemala does not have legislation in that sense, so part of the priorities will be to be able to promote an effort that leads to something that as a state we are committed to.†Santiago Palomo said that they would be part of his priorities.

He added that he is willing to work with all actors committed to the fight against corruption.
“Unfortunately the MP does not have a commitment in the fight against corruption, I hope I am wrong, because it is the one called, because it is the one that has the monopoly on criminal investigation, but its actions have given a completely different message,” he assured.
Palomo is a lawyer and notary who graduated from Rafael Landívar University and has a Master’s Degree in Law from Harvard Law School.
