The Spanish national weather service has just launched aalert weather forecast code red for torrential rain in the province of Almeria. “Possible overflows of canals and flooding. The danger is extreme! Do not travel unless absolutely necessary!“, we read in the message posted on social media. It also continues to rain in the province of Valencia, where the state meteorological agency has issued a warning for today for the coastal area and the northern area of Castellon.
The toll rises to 213 deaths, massacres in car parks
Devastating floods in the Spanish Levante, considered the worst of the century, caused at least 213 deadof which 210 in the southern area of Valencia, and 3 women who died in Castile-La Mancha and Andalusia. King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will visit the affected areas today, where another 5,000 military personnel for a total of 7,500 army personnel have been deployed, along with 5,000 police officers and civil guard for rescue operations and search of the missing. Currently, 94% of utilities have had electricity restored, but 7,000 people remain without electricity and many inhabitants without water.
The research continues in submerged parking lotsincluding that of the Bonair shopping center in Aldaia, where rescuers are vacuuming up water and searching for people trapped in vehicles. Teams of firefighters and soldiers from the Military Emergency Unit (Ume) use boats to access the submerged areas, and the Civil Protection has activated psychological support for the victims’ families. In the parking lot of the Consum supermarket in Benetusser, they are searching for at least 20 people among the submerged cars.
The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, clarified that the 1,900 calls to the emergency number 112 do not indicate 1,900 missing people, but represent requests for information from worried family members. The President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazòn, requested the intervention of 7 ministers for the management of the catastrophe, while controversies persist over the delays in alarms and rescue services. Due to the warning for new torrential rains, the access of volunteers to 11 affected municipalities was prohibited for safety reasons.
