With Eliasson’s goal in the 91′, AEK won the derby from Olympiakos (1-0) who had the opportunities but did not take advantage of them and thus remained at the top of the standings in the 2nd matchday of the Super League playoffs.
In the packed “OPAP Arena”, AEK took the initiative with a lot of pressing, but Olympiacos was the one who missed the first big chance in the derby in the 9th minute. From Pontense’s cross, Masouras, undisturbed from close range, got a header but Athanasiadis saved his team…
The game had pace and many strong duels with both teams trying to create dangers with long balls. In the 25th minute, Gacinovic sent the ball high out from an excellent position. In the 65th minute, Martins threatened with a header out. In the 77th minute, Zuber hit the crossbar from close range in AEK’s great opportunity. And in the 81′, Athanasiadis showed himself to be in the form of the match as he saved again from Tsiquinios’ volley. The match took on a wild beauty and the game became a thriller. In the 88th minute, Jovetic nearly scored with a technical shot. However, in the 91st minute, AEK “killed” the visitors when Eliasson, from Mandalos’ vertical shot, correctly placed Tzolakis and gave the victory to his team (1-0).
