AEK Athens Qualifies for Champions League Playoffs Despite Tragic Incident with Croatian Ultras

AEK Athens qualified for the playoffs of the Champions League this Saturday after their draw (2-2) in Athens against Dinamo Zagreb in the second leg of the third preliminary round of the competition, postponed due to the death of a Greek fan due to an attack by ultras eleven days ago.

Michalis Katsouris, 29, died of a haemorrhage after being stabbed during violent incidents between Croatian ultras Dinamo Zagreb and AEK near the Greek club’s stadium in Nea Filadelfia, on the outskirts of Athens.

That drama took place on the eve of a Champions League preliminary round match, which was postponed by UEFA until August 19.

This Saturday the AEK Athens players laid flowers before a portrait of the deceased fan in the stands. In addition, a minute of silence was observed.

The police established important security measures to avoid any problems. Thousands of agents, drones and helicopters were mobilized, with a prosecutor present at the stadium.

The Greek justice last week charged and placed in provisional arrest 105 people accused of having participated in the incidents. Among them, 102 are Croatians suspected of being linked to the Bad Blue Boys, ‘hooligans’ of Dinamo Zagreb.
