Aegina: Upheaval in the case of the submarine pipeline – Sabotage or failure? – 2024-02-17 13:06:34

The autopsy of the Underwater Missions Unit of the Coast Guard, in the presence of an expert from the Piraeus Prosecutor’s Office, seems to overturn the facts regarding the damage suffered by the underwater water supply pipeline that connects the Aegina with Salamis.

The damage was initially attributed to sabotage with the use of an explosive device, however, in the two autopsies that were carried out at a depth of 50 meters and at a distance of 830 meters from the coast, no damages compatible with an explosion were detected, as noted by today’s “Kathimerini” publication.

Employees of the construction company moved the concrete cover, and then Coast Guard frogmen proceeded to the second autopsy, where they recorded damage indicating Hardware Failure and not to some explosion. According to what “Kathimerini” reports, the crack in the pipeline is located at the point where the pipes join, while no signs such as holes or damage from a violent impact were found on its surface.

The relevant visual material recorded by the MIA men will be forwarded to the Piraeus prosecutor, while the expert will draw up the final conclusion. Finally, with regard to the subsidence of the concrete coating, the Coast Guard estimates that it was caused by rapid erosion of the bottom due to the violent leakage of fresh water, as “Kathimerini” notes.

For its part, the manufacturing company is taking a wait-and-see attitude, as the technical advisor it appointed seems to be sticking to the sabotage version. If the Authorities conclude that the damage was caused by a hardware failure, then the company will be required to cover the costs of repair. In the opposite case, that of sabotage, the bill will go to the Region of Attica.
