The prestigious Burgas AEG “Geo Milev” continues to impress with its innovative approaches to education and sustainable development.
With the beginning of the new school year for the English high school, a big challenge called “Smart Roof for the Future” started – a project to build a photovoltaic plant with a permaculture garden on part of the school’s roof.
High temperatures in classrooms during the warmer months of the school year are a problem that all schools face.
In order to improve the learning environment and ensure the comfort of the students of AEG “Geo Milev”, the school will install air conditioners in all classrooms. However, increased power consumption requires a more sustainable solution. This is how the idea of ”Smart Roof for the Future” was born.
The construction of a photovoltaic plant on part of the roof of the school is an initiative fully in line with European and global strategies to reduce the carbon footprint. But the ambitious management of the high school does not stop there – it sets itself the goal of creating a pilot project for Bulgaria by building a permaculture garden under the photovoltaics.
This garden will feature one raised bed for each class, providing students with hands-on experience and an opportunity to learn about sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
Permaculture gardens are increasingly common in countries such as Japan and have a number of benefits, from reducing roof surface temperatures to providing fresh produce and enriching the culture of young people.
The beds are built with a multi-layered structure that promotes the natural process of decomposition and maintenance of soil fertility, while facilitating access to plants.
Already with its very presentation, the idea of ”Smart Roof for the Future” managed to gather many like-minded people, and the Regional Governor of Burgas – Prof. Maria Neykova became its face.
Teachers and students, united by the cause, chose September 26 to organize a charity concert, the funds of which will support the implementation of the project. The charity concert will be held in the courtyard of AEG “Geo Milev” from 18:00 on September 26, and various events throughout the day will mark the Day of European Languages and the European Day of Sports.
