The FSU union of physical education and sports teachers led, on October 19 and 20, in Dijon, debates around “a necessary strengthening of physical and sports practice in France”.
Press release from the SNEP-FSU of the Dijon academy of October 19, 2023:
The SNEP-FSU Dijon brings together 150 PE teachers on October 19 and 20, 2023 at the International Meeting Center. These two days of debates and training are also a moment of building demands to address the findings of a sharply increasing sedentary lifestyle among our students and a decline in young people’s physical abilities.
The SNEP-FSU notes a necessary strengthening of physical and sporting practice in France. The School plays a fundamental role here because it allows all students without distinction, via compulsory PE and school sport, to practice and learn in physical sporting and artistic activities.
We affirm that it is possible to move towards more sporty youth by strengthening the place of PE within the education system. This is in contrast to the political decisions which have only weakened the place of this education in recent years.
The SNEP-FSU proposes increasing the hours of compulsory PE to 4 hours throughout schooling. It is a decisive lever to enable the development of a sporting culture in our society and to fight against the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle.
This hourly increase must be accompanied by an upgrading of PE within a renovated School (place of PE in exams, equipment, recruitment, etc.). (**)
The SNEP-FSU Dijon will continue to act with teachers, school actors and actresses, parents and athletes for the development of sport for all.
Examples of weakening of EPS in the education system:
– There is no longer a test for the EPS for the National Brevet Diploma since 2017.
– Job cuts have been massive for 6 years. Since 2017, there have been 28,806 more students in public secondary education for 1009 fewer PE teacher positions.(**) The revaluation of PE involves several demands that you can find on our brochure “More sporty youth is possible” from PE Week 2023:
