Immigrant advocates have launched the “Free Abuelo” campaign in New York to achieve the release of Mexican Oscar Chico Castillodetained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Make the Road New York organization and the family of Chico Castillo, 58, have made a called on ICE to release the migrant arrested when he tried to enter the United States through the border with Canada.

Chico Castillo had lived in the New York area for more than 20 years and decided to return to Mexico in 2022 to open a business. However, He received threats from a criminal gang that forced him to return to the United Stateswhere his children and grandchildren live.
Deisy Flores, immigration attorney at Make the Road New York, warned in a statement that deporting the Mexican would be exposing him to imminent death. “We demand that ICE immediately release him from detention so that he can safely return to his family (to New York), where he belongs.”
The migrant has been detained for two months in the ICE jail in Buffalo.

Flores explained that to the Mexican, who has no criminal offenses against him, he was denied the opportunity to apply for asylum in United States.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had 35,289 foreigners in custody at the end of September. 68.7% of those arrested have no criminal recordaccording to data revealed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) center at Syracuse University.
