Anyone traveling by car in Kattenturm from the community center Obervieland on Alfred-Faust-Straße towards the Sparkasse can drive at 30. On the section of road between the Sparkasse – past several social facilities such as a school, two daycare centers and a senior citizens’ home – to Dreyer At the moment, however, the road is still 50 km / h. The Obervieland Advisory Board has been trying for years to change that and to ensure more safety in front of the social facilities by limiting the speed – so far in vain.
A new opportunity could now be the new road traffic regulations that have already been implemented elsewhere in the city. Because now Tempo 30 is in principle allowed in front of sensitive facilities, should there be no serious reasons against it.
Therefore, shortly before the end of the year, the advisory board received a proposal from the Office for Roads and Transport (ASV) to set up a 330-meter-long Tempo 30 route in front of the elementary school between Wilhelm-Holzmeier-Strasse and the first junction to Wischmannstrasse. The problem from the point of view of the transport committee, which has dealt with the topic: the motorists could accelerate to 50 km / h again directly in front of the senior citizens’ home in the Kattenesch district.
“We can’t use a patchwork quilt like we did on Osterdeich, it only confuses drivers and doesn’t increase safety,” said Gerd Schmidt (CDU). Committee spokesman Rolf Noll (Greens) also criticized the proposal as inadequate: “We want traffic to flow evenly on the road – without the 50 km / h sections in between, road users cannot cope with that.”
Ralf Sager (SPD) calculated that the entire section between the Sparkasse and the Dreyer Straße roundabout could be signposted at 30 km / h if the planned 300-meter protective section at 30 km / h were taken into account for each of the social facilities along the route. All arguments that led to the Transport Committee unanimously rejecting the ASV’s proposal. Instead, the advisory board calls on traffic senator Maike Schaefer (Greens) to set up Tempo 30 for the entire section between Theodor-Billroth-Straße (Sparkasse) and the roundabout in the transition to Dreyer Straße, and thus also to protect the old people’s home.
