The worldwide shortage of Ozempic (semaglutide), which is also used as a slimming aid, will continue next year, the council heard from the manufacturer.
Capacity problems in factories
“The shortage is prolonging due to capacity issues at factories and rapidly increasing demand for the drug.” In the meantime, to increase production of Ozempic, the manufacturer is reducing the supply of Victoza (liraglutide).
Improving the delivery of Ozempic will take at least the first quarter of the coming year. Improvement in the supply of Victoza will probably last until the second quarter of 2024.
The council cannot say whether the increased demand for Ozempic is due specifically to the interest in the weight loss drug, but given all the interest, it does not rule that out.
Enough alternatives
However, the authority is never told what doctors prescribe a drug for and a prescription for Ozempic may also be given for obesity.
There are also plenty of alternatives to the drug as a remedy for diabetes.
