Less administrative burden for the doctor, more transparency and above all: more time for the patient in the consultation room. Speech recognition leads to faster and more efficient file management. This has many advantages for both doctor and patient. At the Medical Center Leeuwarden (MCL) they have positive experiences with it.
File management in the medical world is time-consuming. Medical specialists can therefore provide less care or are sometimes forced to work in the evenings to get their reporting in order. By directly converting spoken word into written text, healthcare professionals spend less time on documentation. “On average, doctors dictate 150 words per minute with speech recognition. That is three times faster than typing,” explains Harm Wesseling, Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the MCL. “That results in significant time savings.”

Fewer and fewer mistakes
With speech recognition, the doctor records his or her report into a speech recognition tool with a microphone. The text is then processed directly in the electronic patient file (EPD). “In the past, the latter sometimes went wrong,” says Wesseling. “The doctor then recorded the text, but then had to read it for possible errors. That still took time. Due to improved speech recognition technology in recent years, these errors have virtually disappeared. The text therefore enters virtually error-free
