Advantage in Wetterau – number of fully inpatient patients still below pre-Corona levels

In 2023, German hospitals treated 1.29 million patients from Hesse as inpatients. Just over half (52 percent) of them were women. Compared to the previous year 2022, the number of people treated increased by 1 percent or 13,700 people. It was still below the pre-Corona level of 2019, when 1.44 million fully inpatient hospital stays by Hessian patients were counted, 10 percent more than in 2023.

Cardiovascular diseases are the most common reason for treatment overall

The most common reason for inpatient hospitalization was cardiovascular diseases (15 percent), with 188,400 cases, followed by diseases of the digestive system with 127,400 cases (10 percent) and injuries and poisoning of any kind with 125,300 cases (10 percent).

Patients who were treated for a diagnosis of mental and behavioral disorders spent the longest time in hospital, with an average of 24.6 days. This affected 74,100 people in the reporting period (6 percent of all cases).

Younger people are usually being treated for infections or mental illnesses

While those under 30 made up around 18 percent of all treatment cases with 228,100 patients, they were disproportionately represented in some diagnostic groups: In the case of infectious or parasitic diseases, they made up 26 percent of all patients who had mental and behavioral disorders their share is 28 percent. In contrast, only 2 percent of patients with cardiovascular disease and 3 percent with cancer were younger than 30 years.

Patients aged 60 and over accounted for 54 percent of the total patient volume. They accounted for 82 percent of all cases of cardiovascular disease. This age group was also significantly more represented than other age groups when it came to cancer, with a share of 74 percent.
