Kiev acknowledged, on Sunday, that Russian forces had made progress in 4 regions of eastern Ukraine, where fierce battles were taking place “everywhere”, noting that the situation was complex. At the same time, the Ukrainian forces confirmed that they had “made partial progress” in the framework of the counter-attack they had been launching for weeks.
What did Kyiv say?
Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Ghana Malyar, wrote on social media: “Fierce battles are taking place everywhere (…) the situation is complicated,” according to “AFP.” It added that the Ukrainian forces are advancing in one area in the east of the country and two areas in the south. She explained, “The enemy is advancing in the areas of Avdiivka, Marinka and Liman. The enemy is also advancing in the Svatov sector.”
These areas are located in Donetsk province, where fighting is raging between the two parties in light of the counterattack launched by Kiev.
As for the Ukrainian forces, they were able to achieve “partial success” with their advance in the southern side of Bakhmut, which was controlled by the Russian “Wagner” group last May, as well as near Berdyansk and Melitopol in the south of the country, according to the Ukrainian official.
The deputy defense minister noted that in the south of the country, Ukrainian forces are making “gradual” progress in the face of “strong enemy resistance”.
She added that the Ukrainian forces are “working persistently and non-stop to create the conditions for achieving progress as quickly as possible.”
Storming of Russian fortifications
And the Ukrainian army announced earlier on Sunday, “the storming of the fortifications of the Russian forces towards Bakhmut, with cover and artillery shelling.”
He said that the “Third Infantry Division” succeeded in storming those fortifications, to make progress towards Bakhmut, which was the scene of bloody battles for months.
counterattack
This development comes after Kiev said, on Friday, that the Ukrainian forces are advancing in all directions of the counterattack targeting the Russian forces.
Since the start of the counter-offensive last June, Ukraine has said it has regained control of a group of villages in the southeast.
This comes despite the fact that Russia still controls large areas of land in the east and southeast.
