Adrian Newey has been the top designer of the Red Bull Racing team for many years. The Brit plays an important role within the team, but team boss Christian Horner says that they almost lost Newey in the past. Ferrari was close to signing the designer a few years ago.
Newey has been playing an important role within the Red Bull Racing team for some time. He has been working for the team from Milton Keynes since 2006 and is the man behind the championship cars of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Today he is no longer involved full-time in the Formula 1 project, but Red Bull did extend his contract. Confidence in Newey is still enormous.
Vettel
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner says that it would not have made much difference if Newey had left the team. Horner is a guest in the podcast ‘Eff won with DRS’ and there he explains the story: “We became champions in ’10, ’11, ’12 and ’13. Then there was a major rule change and our engine supplier at the time had the missed the boat. Vettel then left the team because of the engine and Adrian was almost gone too. It was half an hour apart.”

Newey was about to sign a contract with the Ferrari team, but Horner managed to talk him out of it. The British team boss had to go far for that: “Ferrari really wanted him. They wanted to give him everything. He could have a Hollywood lifestyle, he could be taken from Monaco to the factory. He didn’t have to pay taxes if he would design a road car and all that kind of stuff. I convinced him to stay there by promising him that we would build a road car too.”
