The presentation today by the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, of the “institution” of the afternoon surgeries with which they are trying to adopt the well-known “bag” of the doctors, while the state will collect the corresponding taxes, turned into a massage of public opinion.
After in their analysis the Minister of Health together with the Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistokleous admitted the waiting lists for surgeries, Adonis Georgiadis announced that from February 1st they have put into operation the single list of surgeries.
He added that the site for the single list will be live in 3 months from today and through this fellow citizens will know how much the wait will be per surgery clinic
It is noted that according to the list of Mr. Themistokleous, after the “clearing” of the list of surgeries, more than half of the 102,000 surgeries will have to wait more than 4 months, while of these over 26,000 surgeries have a waiting time of more than of a year.
“No” to salary increases for doctors – The cost of surgeries
“It is not true that we are trying to privatize through the door of the National Social Insurance Institution” Adonis Georgiadis claimed while ruling out the increase in doctors’ salaries. He even noted that the cost of afternoon surgeries will be lower than in private ones.
Specifically and according to the tables, the cost of the operation in the afternoon surgeries will be from 300 to 2,000 euros and will be lower than that of the private surgeries.
“It’s something that’s easy to say, hard to do. I, as the Minister of Health, would not agree to the salary increase of only doctors” said Mr. Georgiadis to then add one “blackmail” saying how “the state budget spends 3 billion euros a year. So you can calculate what doubling doctors’ salaries might mean financially. ENFIA offers 1.6 billion euros and we would need another ENFIA to proceed with such a doubling. We had to find a way to increase the incomes of doctors and nurses in a legal way”, he said, admitting in essence that the costs are passed on to the citizens.
“We are not legalizing the sachet – as some say – it remains illegal and we will continue to pursue it” specifically mentioned without answering the substance that the “bag” itself means a cost to the insured.

- Large: €1,200
- Heavy: €1,600
- Extra Heavy: 2,000
At the same time, it became known that there are currently 102,634 cases waiting for surgery.
44,459 (43%) are waiting 0-4 months, 31,954 (31%) are waiting 4-12 months, while 26,221 (26%) cases are waiting more than a year.
The “cap” will be paid by the insured
At the same time he expressed his opinion that “the exit of paid evening surgeries will be embraced. At first it will be accepted more hesitantly but I believe that in time it will be accepted by most surgical clinics and it will be accepted by those who can” completed.
According to Adonis Georgiadis, what appears to everyone as the privatization of Health and additional charges for the insured “The evening surgeries are a measure to remedy the lack of staff. It is not mandatory for all NHS surgical clinics to establish afternoon surgeries. We give them the freedom with strict conditions to proceed with such a move if they can”
As an insurance policy to prevent morning surgeries from being transferred to the afternoon (therefore with a fee), he argued that the license would exist “with the absolute observance of the average of the morning surgeries that were in force before. If he falls below the average he will lose his license for afternoon surgeries.”
Presenting the fact that the average time for an appointment of the NHS with the doctors after the afternoon appointments is 1/3 compared to 22 years ago, he estimated that there will be a corresponding improvement, not immediately, also for the surgeries, something which obviously cannot be done with the existing budget and staff.
“We will follow the course of the afternoon surgeries, I am interested in the result. Our aim is for the afternoon surgeries to be a much more economical solution than the private clinics. We are giving the Greek people an additional way out. We have to give way to the choice of a person who wants to pay in a legal way and without an unbearable way” concluded the minister of health, always loyal to charging more to the citizen through the back door.
