admissions to Internal Medicine at the Polyclinic blocked. Values different from Di Venere

“Fortunately there is not even a patient with legionellosis, only one is in intensive care and has been transferred from the Polyclinic. In a cross-check between ARPA and the external company that comes to check us every six months, the data were different. Two nights ago they came to carry out the check and we will have the results in a couple of days ”. Speaking is the medical director of the Di Venere hospital, Alessandro Sansonetti. The reference is to the rumors of legionella that have been circulating for days.

“The ARPA carries out a check, the Department does its, we ours, with an external company, and then the data of the three analyzes are crossed – he explained -. This time ours gave minimum values, let’s say the physiological ones, the Department instead received the news from the ARPA that the figure is very high, but of an analysis made in July, months ago. We, by protocol, carry out shock treatments on the tanks and pipes “.

“Had we had patients with legionellosis, we would have been worried, but that’s not the case. The value in the tap water is higher, should it be confirmed, then I will have to move patients and clean the pipes. For now everything is proceeding regularly – concluded Sansonetti – it is not like at the Polyclinic where there was a case in Medicine ”.

Therefore, the too high values detected in the pipes of the Frugoni pavilion at the Policlinico, would be the cause that led the medical director of the University Hospital of Bari, Matilde Carlucci, to order the immediate blocking of admissions to the Internal Medicine clinic.

The decision came after the employees of the Asl Prevention Department carried out a series of samplings, an operation that led to the bitter discovery. As a consequence, it was necessary to immediately block the hospitalizations and to start an internal investigation.

As far as we know, the transfer of hospitalized patients who are not in a position to be discharged should also be introduced, while the others should go home. The objective of the investigation launched should be to trace the causes that led the Legionella bacillus beyond the threshold values and above all to understand if its presence may have had any consequences on those who recently passed through the ward.
