Administrative Court of First Instance of Piraeus: Lawyer in trial with a gun in his belt – 2024-04-17 15:56:24

The issue of court security arises due to another incident, this time at Administrative Court of First Instance of Piraeus after the accidental revelation that a lawyer entered the building with a gun in a holster on his belt.

The history of the case, for which the police were immediately informed, is described in an official announcement by the Piraeus Administrative Court, which states the following:

“On 12-4-2024 at 11.30 in the morning, another incident, which took place at the Administrative Court of First Instance of Piraeus, came to be added to similar previous ones, compellingly shaking the issue of the security of the third largest Administrative Court of the Country, as well as of all of the Courts and those serving in them.

A man from the security service supervising the entrance of the public to the courthouse at 17 Pylis Street spotted a revolver placed in a holster on the belt worn by a lawyer entering the building. After relevant actions by the Court Directorate and communication with the competent police authorities, within ten minutes, police officers from the AT Municipal Theater and other agencies rushed to the scene, taking the required legal actions to neutralize the threat. The lawyer in question intended to attend the hearing of the big money case and ask for the 8th adjournment in a row, revolver in his belt.

Regardless of the painless outcome of this incident, every competent state authority is asked: In the absence of security personnel in most of the country’s courts, as well as special machines for detecting metal objects, etc., the Greek State accepts the uncontrolled entry of armed citizens into the courts leave), with obvious security issues arising for Courts staff? If not, what does it intend to do immediately to restore the damaged sense of security of judicial officers, employees and litigants?

We consider it inconceivable that the courthouses of the country are not guarded, especially the long-suffering Administrative Court of First Instance of Piraeus, which, in the recent past, has suffered break-ins, intruders and other unpleasant situations related to the inadequacy of the measures to guard and protect the building facilities and the staff.

Therefore, we strongly protest and address a cry of anguish to every authority. Let this cry not turn into a cry of despair and lamentation. So while there is time, let’s take the necessary initiatives…

A minimal sample of the State’s interest is the placement of an entry control gate in every court of the country, as is the case in all civilized countries, as well as the supply of a mail control machine for all courts.

If these are done BEFORE something worse happens, it will be a sign of State welfare.

If done AFTER there have been victims, they will simply constitute sincere remorse.”
