It would result in a much faster vaccination campaign if the second shot of vaccination was postponed. With the currently available amount, care can then be relieved much faster, because a larger part of society is protected against severe corona.
Several experts argue in favor of this approach: vaccinate everyone with one shot now, and only start with the second in a while. If necessary.
“With that one shot you already kill two birds with one stone: the circulation of the virus decreases and no one gets so sick anymore that they end up in hospital”, says Ben van der Zeijst, emeritus professor of vaccines, former director of the Netherlands. Vaccine Institute and former head of Vaccines at RIVM.
Immunologist Dimitri Diavatopoulos from Radboudumc in Nijmegen and vaccinologist Gideon Kersten at Leiden University also see the advantages of the ‘one shot vaccination strategy’. “With one shot, you can still become very ill with corona, but you can no longer die from it. That is encouraging, because it allows you to think about opening schools, restaurants and shops. The need there is enormous”, says Kersten. .
“In addition, this strategy ensures less dependence on manufacturers and less complex logistics,” says Diavatopoulos.
