Adem Aksoy was face to face with gunman Alphen aan de Rijn: ‘He does not deserve a name’

Art meets Adem in front of the fish shop, where it all started for him. “I ordered a fish and then a gentleman came here with a scooter, then mothers came with crying children”, Adem remembers well. When he hears that someone is shooting around him, he immediately takes action. “My intuition was: something is happening, so I have to do something.”

Adem then walks into the mall and addresses the shooter. “I address him and say, ‘What are you doing?'”, he tells Art. A brave move, in which he himself is hit twice. “Fortunately I also half turned around, otherwise that bullet would have gone right through me and I would not have been standing here. I saw that it was reloading and that was my chance to flee into the mall.”

“He looked like he was in a computer game,” Adem continues. To warn as many people as possible, Adem runs further into the mall. “Luckily he didn’t go after me, but opened the door and shot the people on the other side, shooting a number of people in the head.”

At the risk of his own life, Adem continues on his journey, but cannot save everyone – like a gentleman who sits in a mobility scooter and cannot flee over the counter of a store. “He had nine bullets in his chest and died here (…) This gentleman has no leg, has a mobility scooter and is elderly. If that’s how you end up… I have a hard time with that.”

The man in the scooter is the fourth fatality and meanwhile the bullets keep flying around, while Adem continues to run, warning. With one last effort, Adem manages to get outside, where it has turned into a war zone and police and ambulances come and go with sirens blaring. “You’re just fighting,” said the hero.

When Art confronts him with the fact that he does not pronounce the name of the shooter, Tristan van der Vlis, Adem tells that he has a reason for this. “I will never do that, to me he is the shooter and does not deserve a name after all the misery he has caused.”

Everyone Was Talking About It can be seen every Wednesday at 9.30 pm on RTL 4. Watch the episode here back or at Videoland.
