In the now much-discussed photo on her Instagram, Adele had her hair twisted into a dozen so-called bandoe buns, a hairstyle originally worn by peoples in central and southern Africa. It was not appreciated by many followers. They accused Adele of cultural appropriation, whereby someone who is not part of a certain culture allows himself to be measured for elements of it.

“There were comments like: why doesn’t she take it off? I understand that, but if I had it would have been like it hadn’t happened and it was,” she says now. “I just wasn’t aware of it enough at the time,” she says. Afterwards, ‘karma’ had a lot to do with the 33-year-old singer, she says. “It was a haircut that was actually meant to protect afro hair, but I just ruined mine with it.”

Adele gave the interview because she is back with new music after five years. On October 15 she will release her new single Easy On Me. A new album, which may be called Adele 4, is expected to follow at the end of the year.
