Adele may be one of the biggest stars in the world, but the British singer is still flesh and blood. The superstar, who has made a comeback with her new album 30, could not contain her emotions, and tears, during the recording of the TV special An Audience With Adele.

In the broadcast, previously recorded and shown on ITV in Britain on Sunday evening, Adele is asked by actress Emma Tompson if there was anyone who supported or inspired her in her youth. She replies, “Yes, I had a teacher at Chestnut Grove who taught me English, Miss McDonald. It was only one year, but she was the one who introduced me to literature. I’ve always been obsessed with English – especially now, since I write songs.”

Miss McDonald was also an avid street dancer. “I thought it was too scary to join her, but she showed her dances in the cafeteria. She was really really cool. So endearing. She made sure we thought it was important, while we knew she thought we were important. She also had those gold bracelets on and she wore glittery dresses. She was just so bloody cool and likeable that I always looked forward to going to the English classes.”

When the same Miss McDonald turns out to be in the audience, Adele tears. “You’re amazing, honey!” the singer screams, resulting in a big hug. “Oh my god, I’m so proud of you. Thank you for remembering me,” the teacher whispers in her former student’s ear, to which Adele replies, “You have completely changed my life. Mom, Mom! Can you believe this?”

The crying does mean that the singer has to pay a quick visit to the makeup artist. After promising to exchange songs, the two leave the stage. “Alan (comedian and radio host Aan Carr, ed.), can you entertain the audience for five minutes while I’m gone?” To her band: “Play Make You Feel My Love and let Alan sing it.” Completely taken aback, the British comedian then puts his own spin on one of Adele’s greatest hits…

In the London Palladium were seated next to Emma Thompson, among others actress Emma Watson, actors David Tennant, Bryan Cranston and Samuel L. Jackson, rapper Stormzy, singer Dua Lipa and presenter Graham Norton.
