– The municipalities have made an impressive effort. We must continue to show solidarity with and take our share of the responsibility for people on the run. Therefore, we need the municipalities to stand up again, says Employment and Inclusion Minister Tonje Brenna (Ap) in a press release.
Brenna goes on to say that accepting a large number of refugees over time puts pressure on the capacity and services in the municipalities.
– When we are now planning to settle a record number of refugees for the third year in a row, it requires even more from the community, she adds.
1,000 refugees a week
Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the municipalities have settled 50,000 refugees from the war-torn country.
Labor and Inclusion Minister Tonje Brenna says the government will take measures to reduce the pressure on the municipalities when a record number of refugees are now to be resettled.

In recent months, Norway has received an average of around 1,000 refugees from Ukraine per week. That is more than Sweden, Denmark and Finland combined.
The Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness has already announced that when so many come to Norway, asylum seekers must expect to stay longer in reception.
– Still high arrivals put both the reception system and the settlement under pressure. Therefore, the government has already made some measures and adaptations to deal with the situation. We are following the situation and will consider new measures if there is a need for it. We will have to come back to what adjustments we may need to make, says Brenna in the press release.
Will get Ukrainians into work faster
Many Ukrainians in Norway are now finding work and supporting themselves, the government states in its press release. At the same time, there are many more people who will go to work in the coming time.
The government has therefore submitted for consultation a proposal to sharpen the introduction program with the aim of getting even more people into work faster.
– I believe the workplace is the best integration arena. During the autumn and winter, thousands of Ukrainians will have finished the introductory programme, says Minister of Employment and Inclusion Tonje Brenna.
610 unaccompanied minor refugees
All Norwegian municipalities are asked to settle new refugees. Of the 37,000 new Ukrainian refugees planned to settle in the country, 610 of them are unaccompanied minors.
