Addressing the Growing Drug Problems on Leopoldplatz: Berlin’s Efforts to Combat Drug Consumption and Addiction

Berlin (dpa / bb) – The increasing problems with drug consumption and drug addicts on Leopoldplatz in Berlin-Wedding now want to tackle the Senate and district more intensively. “Predominantly harder drugs such as cocaine, heroin and crack are consumed there,” Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) told dpa after she had already visited the square and Görlitzer Park on Thursday.

The consequences of social and societal causes would become visible there: alcohol and drug consumption in public, neglect and impoverishment. In addition, there would be conflicts between the drug addicts and neighbors and business people, accompanied by crime. The Leopoldplatz is a “social hotspot”, said Spranger, comparable to similar places in Berlin and other cities.

More crack consumption in Berlin

Overall, the increased use of crack, a drug that is made on the basis of cocaine, has a fast-acting effect and is addictive, is causing concern in Berlin.

Feedback from addiction support, addicts and the police indicated that it was spreading, Spranger explained. The phenomenon also exists in other major cities such as Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Hanover and Bremen.

Reasons are the availability of cocaine, the easy manufacturing process, the low price and the high potential for addiction.

A so-called round table with all those affected is now planned for Leopoldplatz in order to find solutions, said Spranger. It is important to exchange ideas with the local people, to whom she has promised to take care of security. “The experiences we had with it in the Kottbusser Tor area were very positive – it helps.”

The police alone cannot solve the problems, other actors such as the district with social work and construction work on the squares are also required. “If we think of all this together, bring it together and stick with it consistently, that would be a big step forward.

That’s why I’m counting on the security summit next week.” When it came to criminal prosecution, Spranger again called for better ways of confiscating illegal assets.
