The director of the “Hristo Botev” program and a member of The Program Board of the BNR Kin Stoyanov addressed the case of the unbroadcast interview of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation H.E. mrs Eleonora Mitrofanova.
“When we talk about censorship, let’s also talk about the right to protest. Just like the colleagues from the Horizon program in 2001, after the unfortunate election of Ivan Borislavov as the general director of the BNR, expressed their right to protest and refused to read news. They deprived the Bulgarian society of its right to be informed. It was then that the star of Petar Volgin and Silvia Velikova rose, let’s not forget that,” recalled the director of the “Hristo Botev” program.
In his words, “the members of the BNR Program Board are colleagues who have been in the profession for many years, and we expressed our right to protest with a reasoned vote not to broadcast this interview”.
“For me, this was not an interview, because the interview has its genre specifics, for me it was a friendly conversation between a diplomatic representative who did not behave like an ambassador of a foreign country in another sovereign country, but behaved like a governor-general of the territory. And his interlocutor helpfully passed him the ball,” added Kin Stoyanov.
“There were an awful lot of false facts and circumstances in the interview. The presenter never asked Ambassador Mitrofanova why on September 5, 1944, the USSR declared war on the Kingdom of Bulgaria.
A colleague, a member of the Program Council, was the most eloquent, saying that there was no problem with Ambassador Mitrofanova giving an interview to the BNR, but it should be taken by another journalist. And it is best for Peter Volgin to interview, let’s say, the Secretary General of NATO, and then we will fulfill our public function,” he added.
Kin Stoyanov commented on the need for a routine, rhythmic editorial process in accordance with the ethical standards laid down in the BNR.
“Plato’s model of the ideal state suggests that there are warriors who guard both kings and workers. They, he recommends, should practice gymnastics to be strong and repel enemies, and should study poetry to be spiritually sensitive and not to turn their power against their own citizens. Journalists in the modern world are like the warriors of Plato’s “ideal state”. And the rules are the Code of Ethics in Journalism, as well as the rules for editorial work. So that journalism cannot turns into propaganda.
“When you face a strong contradiction with your ethical understanding of the profession, your position that something should or should not be made public is a matter of protest, it is no longer censorship,” he added.
