The safety and integrity of the olive groves, increased police presence and regular patrolling of the green areas and even placing microchips in the olive fruits or in the bags, following the example of Spain, is proposed to be done in Greece due to the fact that this year the failure of the harvest and rising product prices have led to a significant increase in theft.
According to market experts, the price of olive oil could reach 15 euros per liter, Vangelis Protogerakis, president of the Association of Olive Growers in Heraklion, told ANT1. Discussions have begun about microchipping olives, as is done with livestock, so that in case of theft, stolen goods can be traced.
Protogerakis stressed that there has already been a request for an increased police presence in areas where olive trees grow to prevent theft. The damage from the theft of olive oil, reported by the Agricultural Cooperative for Olives in Poligiros in Halkidiki, is estimated at over 370,000 euros.
Olives with GPS is an idea that arose in 2018 among farmers in Granada (Spain) to prevent theft in olive groves. The transmitter is round in shape, green or black in color and looks like an olive. This is a chip that has a hidden radio frequency device inside.
