In Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain, Netflix customers are already confronted with the streaming group’s new guidelines. Customers in these countries will only be charged an extra fee if they share their subscription with friends and family who do not live in their household. South Africa and Latin America were the first regions where Netflix rolled out the new policy.
Users must therefore specify a location from which their account is managed. Of course, it should still be possible to access the account on the go: be it on a mobile device or in a hotel. Apparently there will be one-time passwords that can be retrieved. It will be possible to transfer the watchlist from an existing account to a new one.
You can add another person to the account for an extra fee. In Canada it costs about 5.50 euros, in Spain 6 euros. Specifically, this is dealt with via “Standard” or “Premium” subscriptions.
Netflix estimates that 100 million subscribers use shared accounts. The streaming giant is changing its sharing policy due to the fierce competition that other streaming services are putting on the top dog. The new regulations are expected to be rolled out in the US and UK in the first half of the year.
