Addition of 4 additional weeks of employment insurance: “Disappointing” for Action-Chômage Côte-Nord – Le Haute Côte-Nord

Action-Chômage Côte-Nord welcomes the addition of 4 additional weeks of employment insurance for seasonal workers by the federal government with disappointment.

The organization also denounces the lack of adequate coverage for all seasonal workers in our region, one of the 13 targeted by this measure presented in the economic statement from Canada’s Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland.

“This is good news for some, but the overly complicated criteria mean that others will not have access to these 4 weeks,” says Line Sirois, general director of Action-Chômage Côte. -North (ACCN).

“In the same company, there will be workers who will not have access to any additional week due to the criteria, others to 5 weeks and 9 weeks because they meet all the criteria,” she illustrates.

The ACCN, which has campaigned for years for a complete reform of the employment insurance system, finds this diffuse attempt to meet the needs of seasonal workers “unacceptable”.

“The government has really caused total chaos trying to please us. It’s unfair and disappointing,” says the general director.

“However, we can rejoice, because the government understood that there was a problem in the region. However, he is not able to find the solution to help all the workers,” underlines Line Sirois.
