Addictive gameplay, annoying protagonist and dull open world in Atomic Heart preview

IGN has released the final preview Atomic Heart, where the journalist shared his opinion under a six-minute cutting of gameplay footage. The action, design, built-in tension, as well as a variety of fun mini-activities, such as watching episodes of “Wait a minute!” right inside the game.

Separate praise went to the chic music of Mick Gordon.

There were also disadvantages. The journalist compared the protagonist to a fourteen-year-old Fortnite fan and noticed that dubious jokes repeated from time to time make you seriously miss the silent protagonists from Doom or Half-Life 2. The open world also turned out to be not very impressive. In contrast to the plot locations worked out and filled with interesting details, for the most part, it consists of the same dull fields and farms, which practically kills interest in research.

Other publications published text versions of previews. Rock Paper Shotgun noted the strange encounters that await a hero in the world, like a grandmother shooting robots with a grenade launcher. Polygon generally characterizes the game, rather, as a classic corridor shooter of the old years, leaving the open world out of the brackets. This is joined by NME, whose representative was directly told by someone from the development team that the open world here is just a way to get from one corridor dungeon to another. But the journalist highly appreciated the dungeons, noting that they were made carefully and very interesting. Representative GamesRadar also noted that the game shows itself well as an old-school shooter, although it sags heavily in immersiveness, and close combat is not very interesting.

Most of them also agree on a dislike for the protagonist and his atmosphere-breaking jokes, a love for the game’s varied, complex and interesting combat, and constant references to Bioshock.

Atomic Heart is a first-person shooter that will unfold in an alternative version of the USSR. The main character will have to stop the attack of robots.

The title will be released on February 21 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
