Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Japanese Interior Minister Minoru Terada reportedly resigned on Sunday (20/11/2022), in connection with a funding scandal.
Minoru became the third cabinet member to leave in less than a month due to faltering support from Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Reuters reported Kishida’s resignation after media reports that the prime minister was preparing to fire him. Although Kishida’s office could not be reached for comment on the report.
Minoru himself was under fire for several funding scandals. He even admitted that his support group had submitted funding documentation that appeared to be signed by a deceased person.
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida also accepted Terada’s resignation, to prioritize parliamentary debate, including discussion of a second additional budget for the fiscal year ending in March.
Kishida also spoke up when asked if there were 3 ministers who had resigned since Oct. 24. He said he wanted to apologise.
“I feel a great responsibility,” he told reporters, quoting Reuters, on Sunday (11/20/2022).
Terada’s departure brought Prime Minister Kishida’s support below 30% in opinion polls. Thus making it even more difficult to carry out his political agenda.
On October 24, former economic revitalization minister Daishiro Yamagiwa resigned over his ties to religious groups.
Additionally, Justice Minister Yasuhiro Hanashi resigned in mid-November over comments that were seen as detracting from his job responsibilities.
