WhatsApp introduces more ways to manage your contacts. In the future, you will no longer only be able to add contacts to WhatsApp on your smartphone, but also in the web version or the desktop app.
The contacts that are displayed to you on WhatsApp are currently only based on the phone book in your smartphone. But in the future you will also be able to add contacts on other devices.
WhatsApp wants to increase the security of your contact list. It should therefore be possible in the future for you to save contacts exclusively on WhatsApp and not in your phone book. We’ll show you how it works.
Add contacts on WhatsApp – here’s how
In order to be able to chat or make phone calls with a contact on WhatsApp, you previously had to add them via your phone book. You could do this in two different ways – either by scanning a QR code or by typing the phone number on your smartphone.
In the future, you will also be able to reach numbers via WhatsApp if you don’t have your cell phone to hand. Because WhatsApp now also lets you add and manage contacts in the desktop app or in the web version.
This new function will initially come to WhatsApp Web and the app for Windows. WhatsApp sea Other linked devices should also be activated later.
Save contacts only in the app
In addition, in the future you will also be able to save contacts exclusively on WhatsApp. These will then not be found in the phone book on your smartphone.
WhatsApp is introducing this new feature primarily for people who share their phones with others. But the separation of personal and business contacts can also be better achieved if, for example, several WhatsApp accounts are used on one device.
It is no longer necessary to provide the telephone number. The new function also makes it possible to save contacts with their username.

More security for your contacts on WhatsApp
The Meta subsidiary has developed a new encrypted storage system for the new functions for your WhatsApp contacts. With the Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS), you will be able to manage your contacts directly on WhatsApp in the future and – if you lose your smartphone, for example – you can easily restore them.
IPLS also allows you to decide whether you want to sync your WhatsApp contacts with your device. You can use a slider to decide between the two storage options.
