AdBlue: what it is, what it is for and why you need to buy it right now

In the fuel crisis, there is also the concern linked to AdBlue, with the price of the additive for diesel engines which has rapidly doubled

AdBlue, the next node to worry about soon. In these delicate weeks at an international level, the rise in fuel prices has hit the pocket of Italians. But diesel and petrol are not the only ones to have undergone an incredible leap forward in prices: methane is also at the center of the crisis, for obvious reasons due to relations with Russia. And this is how, for those with a latest generation diesel engine (from Euro 5 onwards), there is one more cause for concern: it is the mysterious AdBleu, that small tank that you usually see every time next to the classic.

AdBlue, that’s what it is

It is an additive that is used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) in diesel engines, essential for the functioning of Scr catalysts: the AdBlue mixture is essentially composed of urea extracted from hydrogen, the same hydrogen that comes from the methane. This is why AdBlue prices have soared: in fact, many companies have suspended production for over a week, unable to face the cost of the raw material. The reflection is the increase in the price in distributors: more or less a liter of AdBlue covers around 600km and a tank is approximately half of the main one, therefore depending on the size of your car it could be between 15 and 25 liters.

AdBlue, you can also fill up at home (saving money)

At petrol stations, it is already becoming a challenge to be able to top up AdBlue: its price is reaching truly exaggerated figures (even over 2.5 euros per liter), when just a few weeks a liter did not even reach one euro. . This is why it is right to evaluate the alternatives, such as buying 10-liter tanks (under the link) at a higher price than some time ago, but still cheaper than the one in circulation.

Each tank is always sold with the hose to be applied, in order to facilitate the transfer into the tank. The important thing to underline is that if your engine uses AdBlue, you absolutely cannot risk running dry, otherwise it could be damaged.
