Jakarta –
President Director of PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk Garibaldi Thohir stated that his party would look for more useful and executable coal downstream products. This was part of the response of the man who is familiarly called Boy Thohir when asked about his interest in entering the coal gasification or Dimethyl Ether (DME) project.
As is known, a company from the United States (US) Air Products has left the coal downstream project in collaboration with PT Bukit Asam Tbk. DME itself is touted as a substitute for LPG:
“We are still exploring, but I think we want to go in that direction, we want to find a downstream that is more useful and more executable. Something that is difficult to execute is useless, it’s just talk about it later,” he said at a press conference at the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGMS). ) in Jakarta (11/5/2023).
He explained, his party had long thought of many alternatives for downstreaming. Boy also said that the best downstream coal is energy.
“We are continuing to explore other problems, namely coking coal, for example, we have also downstreamed it into coke,” he said.
When asked whether DME was difficult to execute, Boy only answered that the initiator of the project itself withdrew. He also said, if the price of coal is high, then from a business point of view it doesn’t make sense.
“Yes, the initiator did not step down,” he said.
“We continue to explore, for example DME is because coal prices are high, it doesn’t count. But DME is one, not the only one,” he continued.
