Adams travels to DC to address immigration crisis as voters disapprove of his job, poll shows

NEW YORKNew York City Mayor Eric Adams heads to Washington, D.C., Thursday, after canceling a trip in November over an FBI investigation, to meet with congressional leaders and federal officials from the president’s administration. Biden to discuss the impact of the asylum seeker crisis on the city.

Among the leaders who will meet with the Democrat are Senator Charles Schumer, with the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Deanne Criswell and the Democratic leader of the United States House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries.

The visit to the country’s capital occurs when a new surveyfrom Quinnipiac University New York, found that only 28% of voters approve of the job the mayor is doing and 58% disapprove.

That’s the lowest job approval rating for any New York City mayor since Quinnipiac began surveying city voters in 1996. Before Adams, the lowest negative job approval rating was held by former Mayor Bloomberg in July 2003 with 31 to 60%.

VOTERS’ OPINION ON THE MAYOR’S WORK WITH THE MIGRATION CRISIS

The survey also found that a majority of New Yorkers, 83%, have concerns about the large budget cuts being made to the city due to the immigration crisis and how those cuts will impact their daily lives.

Regarding this immigration crisis, the survey shows that more than 8 in 10 voters, that is, 85%, are either very concerned (64%) or somewhat concerned (21%) that the city will not be able to accommodate the wave of immigrants who have arrived in New York City since the spring from 2022.

Of New York City’s decisions to control the crisis, approximately two-thirds of voters (65%) approve of the right to housing mandate, which states that the city must house any homeless person seeking shelter , while 31% disapprove of the mandate. An issue that has generated controversy and protests during the week, when several organizations gathered to ask Governor Kathy Hochul and the mayor to provide safe housing for immigrants.
