The English Ice Hockey Federation will make neck protectors mandatory after the death of Adam Johnson. The 29-year-old ice hockey player was hit in the neck by a skate during a match in Sheffield, England.
The obligation to wear neck protection will come into effect on January 1, 2024, but the association urgently requests players to wear the protection now.
In addition to requiring neck protection, the association also wants to see what other measures can be taken to make ice hockey safer.
Not (yet) mandatory in the Netherlands
Neck protection is not yet required in America and the Netherlands. Ice hockey players do not have to protect their necks during international matches either.
Former ice hockey international Ron Berteling argued earlier in the day for making neck protection mandatory. “Something serious always has to happen before a rule is adjusted or added,” said Berteling, still the record international of the Dutch team and namesake of the super cup in ice hockey.
Protection is mandatory for Dutch youth and the ice hockey association strictly monitors compliance with this. “I really have no idea why that doesn’t also apply to seniors,” says Berteling.
Berteling is clear about mandatory neck protection in ice hockey: ‘Absolutely’
The English police have also launched an investigation into Johnson’s death. The 29-year-old later died of his injuries in hospital after the skate accident.
Police say the investigation is focusing on the circumstances surrounding the player’s death and are appealing to the public not to speculate about Johnson’s death.
