Adam Benintendi hits a home run and the White Sox

Andrew Benintendi hit a home run in the ninth inning, and the Chicago White Sox ended a 16-game home losing streak by beating the Oakland Athletics 7-6 on Saturday.

Benintendi, Luis Robert Jr., Nicky Lopez and Lenyn Sosa each had three hits for Chicago, which had lost four in a row overall. Lopez finished with three RBIs.

With a record of 34-115, the White Sox hope to avoid the losing record of the Major Leagues post-1900: 120 by the 1962 New York Mets in their inaugural season.

Chicago led 6-3 in the ninth inning, but Oakland rallied against Justin Anderson.

Varland (1-0) then escaped the jam by retiring Tyler Soderstrom on a grounder to third before Max Schuemann flied out.

Benintendi closed the scoring with his 17th homer, a drive to right field on a slider by Hogan Harris (4-4) on a 1-2 count.

For the White Sox, Cuban Luis Robert Jr. was 3-for-5 with one run scored. Venezuelan Lenyn Sosa was 3-for-4 with one run scored.
