He played a fantastic tournament, Adam Benák from Benjamin collected ten points and became the most productive Czech in the history of participating in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. But he would trade everything for the gold medal, which the team narrowly missed.
Adam, what does silver dot taste like?
We sure are sad. We went for the win, but over time we will surely appreciate what we have achieved here.
The final was ultimately decided by power plays, right? You had a lot of…
We had power plays, we had some chances in them, and it’s certainly a shame that we didn’t handle them better.
“We are certainly sad. We went for the victory, but in time we will certainly appreciate what we have achieved here.”
Can you read something specific?
Maybe in the first third, we didn’t have an ideal start, but then it evened out. I think we played good hockey.
I am proud of all the boys, says captain Hlinský
Still, you were losing and the end was near. Was there a sense of belief at the switch that you would still make it?
We always believed. They play for sixty minutes, so we believed for sixty minutes, and then we equalized. Too bad about the extension.
Three on three against such top-class individuals, it must be something unreal.
Heavy. They have good players but we coped quite well. We probably weren’t better in overtime, but I think it was good.
Then, unfortunately, one mistake decided…
I didn’t see the whole goal, but it’s certainly a shame. I think we should have won.
Also thanks to Jakub Milot?
He catches every match very well, we are very happy that he helps us like that. We definitely appreciate his performance.
The fans were as disappointed as you were for a moment, but then they started clapping in unison. How did it listen?
We thank them for their support. They cheered excellently throughout the tournament and we are very grateful to them for that.
“If it ended with gold around the neck, it would be a hundred times better.”
Are you grateful for how you did? You played a sensational tournament against older competition.
I would say that, except for the match against Sweden, it was not a bad performance. Shame about the finale. If it ended with gold around the neck, it would be a hundred times better.
You also became the most productive Czech in the history of the tournament, which can also warm you up.
I’ll definitely appreciate it over time, but right now the sadness of losing is more prevalent.
Is it a boost to your confidence?
I have to have self-confidence all the time, it’s simply impossible to play without it. As the tournament went quite well for me, it will definitely help me and I will believe more in myself.
How would you describe the group that has been together for almost three weeks?
The crew was amazing. We are all friends here, we have no problems with each other.
And hockey?
Also excellent. We have excellent players here who are well established. I think most will make it far.
We were close, we missed a step, pity the phantom of Milota
