JAKARTA – Acute hepatitis is reported to have claimed the lives of three children from Indonesia. However, it is not certain whether the case has developed or not outside Jakarta
The three pediatric patients are known to be treated at the Dr. Ciptomangunkusumo Jakarta and the cause of their death is not yet known, in a different period from the last two weeks to April 30, 2022.
“Currently, there are reports, both from Jakarta, case reports, and outside Jakarta, there are reports of allegations of additional cases (acute hepatitis),” said Dr. dr. Hanifah Oswari, Sp.A (K), Gastrohepatology Consultant Pediatrician in an online Update on the Development of Acute Hepatitis Cases in Indonesia, Thursday (5/5/2022)

However, Hanifah emphasized that it was not certain whether the report was related to acute hepatitis or not. He ensured that there would be a further investigation regarding the report, which would then be submitted to the public.
“But it still needs to be investigated whether it is true severe acute hepatitis like we are talking about or not, so actually there have been reports but no further investigation has been carried out. Of course we will report further and further data,” he explained.
Meanwhile, on the same occasion, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, M.Epid confirmed that the three children were negative for Covid-19. He explained that the two children, aged 8 and 11, had received the Covid-19 vaccination.
“The 2-year-old has not been vaccinated, while the 8-year-old has only been vaccinated once and the 11-year-old has also been vaccinated,” he explained.
Furthermore, it was conveyed that they (3 pediatric patients) were referrals from hospitals in East Jakarta and West Jakarta. However, the Ministry of Health is trying to investigate the causes of acute hepatitis through a complete viral panel examination. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Health Office is also conducting further epidemiological investigations.
