Actresses Kerry Washington and Mindy Kaling, along with other notable figures, have been named hosts of the Democratic National Convention.
According to initial reports from CNN, each celebrity will host one night of the four-day event, acting like a presenter for an awards show, starting with an introductory speech and reappearing throughout to help navigate the lineup.
Goldwyn will open the evening on Monday, followed by Navarro on Tuesday, Kaling on Wednesday, and Washington will conclude the event on Thursday, where Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept the Democratic nomination.
All four hosts have a history of supporting the Democratic Party, even going so far as to publicly endorse candidates.
Washington, known for her political activism in Hollywood, runs her own nonprofit, Influence Change, which encourages fellow artists to promote civic engagement. She played a key role at the 2020 DNC, opening the third night, and also spoke at the 2012 DNC. The actress and activist, who played a political consultant on Shonda Rhimes’ “Scandal,” also headlined the 2012 DNC.
Kaling and Harris collaborated on a cooking video in 2019, making the South Indian dish masala dosa. In the video, Kaling and then-Senator Harris discussed their shared Indian heritage. The video recently resurfaced following a social media post by former President Donald Trump that cast doubt on Harris’ racial identity.
Navarro, a Republican, has supported Democratic candidates for a decade, since Trump entered politics. Navarro, a television commentator and political strategist who contributes to CNN and co-hosts ABC’s “The View,” has admitted to voting for a Democrat for the first time in 2016, supporting Clinton’s campaign against Trump. Navarro has expressed her allegiance to Harris.
Celebrities have recently shown their support for Harris’ campaign. Hollywood’s presence at previous Democratic conventions has been notable, but Harris’ popularity has drawn comparisons to the entertainment community’s support for former President Barack Obama.
