The Mechelen serial killer Renaud Hardy (61) must pay actress Veerle Eyckermans 208,273.62 euros in damages. The criminal court of Antwerp decided this on Monday. Eyckermans survived an assassination attempt by Hardy nine years ago.
In March 2018, the assize court in Tongeren sentenced Renaud Hardy to life in prison and fifteen years of imprisonment for the murders of Maria Walschaerts (82) in Mechelen and Linda Doms (52) in Hofstade, two rapes with torture, and two murder attempts. including the one on Veerle Eyckermans.
The actress, known for Postbus X, was attacked in her garden in Zemst on February 14, 2015. Hardy attacked her with a stick, but she was able to crawl away under a tree. When a neighbor came to her aid, the serial killer fled the scene. She was seriously injured, but survived.
Posttraumatic stress disorder
In addition to life imprisonment, Hardy was also sentenced in 2018 to pay damages to all civil parties. In order to correctly estimate the damage, a court expert was appointed to investigate Eyckermans, among other things. The expert’s report shows that a full-fledged career as an actress has become impossible for Eyckermans as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Eyckermans was already awarded provisional compensation of 30,000 euros at the time. The court now awarded her damages of 208,273.62 euros. Hardy, who according to the verdict is staying in Merksplas prison, was not present at the hearing. Neither does Eyckermans.
