Writing. The actress Petra Martínez will receive the award on August 31st the highest honorary award given by the International Film Festival Under the Moon – Islantilla Cinefórum, which has recognized the figure of this performer as deserving of the 2024 ‘Luis Ciges’ Award. Martínez will receive the award during the Closing Gala of this film exhibition in the gardens of the Hotel Estival Islantilla, the official headquarters of the festival.
Born in Linares, Petra Martínez has a solid career in theatre, film and television. In her early days, her participation in the independent theatre group Tábano stands out. In 2022, together with her partner Juan Margallo, she received the National Theatre Award. She began her career in cinema in the 1970s in titles such as ‘Colorín colorado’ by José Luis García Sánchez (1976) or ‘Camada negra’ by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón (1977).
She has also worked under the direction of Pedro Almodóvar in ‘Bad Education’ (2004), a title that was followed by other notable titles such as ‘La soledad’ by Jaime Rosales (2007), ‘Born to Suffer’ by Miguel Albaladejo (2009), ‘Mientras dormirs’ by Jaume Balagueró (2011), ‘Todas las mujeres’ by Mariano Barroso (2013) or ‘La vida era eso’ by David Martín de los Santos (2020), for which she received a Goya nomination for Best Leading Actress.
On television, Petra Martínez participated in the legendary ‘Barrio Sésamo’ in the early 80s, later standing out in the series ‘Amar es para siempre’ by Atresmedia, ‘Herederos’ by TVE and ‘La que se avecina’ by Mediaset. One of her most recent appearances in the cinema has been in ‘Cerrar los ojos’ (2023), the return to the cinema of director Víctor Erice.
In previous editions, the Islantilla Festival has recognised the performers Mercedes Sampietro, Miguel Rellán, Ángela Molina, Assumpta Serna, Santiago Ramos, Ana Fernández, Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, Cristina Hoyos, Verónica Forqué, Juan Echanove, Carlos Hipólito, Antonio Resines, Ana Torrent and Pedro Casablanc, as well as the director Benito Zambrano, with the ‘Luis Ciges’ Award, an award that recognises the work of personalities strongly involved with cinema as a means of artistic expression, and which owes its name to the brilliant actor for his special connection with this Festival, to which he donated his most precious books and objects during his lifetime, including the Goya Award for As in Heaven as on Earth.
The international film festival is taking place during July and August in the Islantilla enclave, shared by the Huelva municipalities of Lepe and Isla Cristina, and for two months it screens feature and short films free of charge from Monday to Thursday in the courtyard of the Islantilla Active Centre located on Avenida de Río Frío in this enclave.
