Being a young actor whose parents are also members of the same profession is a difficult test. From the very beginning, society frames him in the wrong stereotypes that hinder growth. The show “Good luck, anniversary!” guest Marija Bērziņš has the following: the mother is an actress and writer Lenvija Sīle, while the father is one of the most talented actors of her generation Andris Bērziņš, who once said of his daughter: “Marija is still trying and afraid to walk on the fragile ice of the stage. But the actor must be able to go. Even on the surface of the water. You have to believe in yourself and you have to go, you have to get more freedom… ”
It has been seven years since the famous quote was given, which could also be called Mary’s break-out – a time of daring and trials. The actress herself admits that it has changed. Not only professionally, but also humanly, spiritually:
“Now I have a much greater ability to be myself as I am. Also not to be perfect and always strong. On the contrary, allow yourself to admit first that I am vulnerable and accept it. ”
These skills are very important in the art environment so that the actor can – in the words of Andris Bērziņš – walk on the water surface.
“When it comes to working with a father, he can also be very demanding, even cruel, as a partner,” continues Maria. “It already happens in art: if you are not good, you will be eaten off the stage. But if you are equal, they will talk to you. ”
In the play “Adata” (musical by composer Zigmars Liepiņš and Andras Manfelde), the daughter and father played a husband and wife – a conflicting couple. “There was a scene where he had to strangle me. And my father, very much into the image, takes me by the neck so thoroughly. I, both in the image and in my own anger, just bite him in defense, ”the actress says temperamentally. “Then he bounced back! It was realized that there is another partner on stage. And that we will have to fight. ”The show was a good thing – Bērziņš had a very natural reaction, Marija smiles.

Although the actress graduated from the Puppet Theater course (2005), life took her to the National Theater. The first big role here was in the production of Raimonds Pauls and Jānis Peters’ famous musical “Kerija” entitled “Kerija. Retrospective ”(2008). Marija started in the second composition, duplicating with the first composition Kerija – actress Dita Lūriņš.
“The beginning was very difficult, I was very naive, a lot of experience – a lot of excitement and desire to do well. And in addition, there was a conflict with the director Galina Polischuk, ”the actress recalls.
“At that time, I was so desperate that I walked through the door of the theater director Ojārs Rubens’ office for a whole month – both wanting and being afraid to give up the role.”
However, the baptism of fire of the first big role was not in vain: the second line-up of the play was nominated for the “Players’ Night” award – Marija Bērziņa and Mārcis Maņjakovs. “Well, someday those biggest blows of life turn into victories,” the charming actress spread her hands with satisfaction.
The blows hardened him with great courage. For example, in creating her mono-play, Mary chooses a fragment of none other than James Joyce’s almost sacred novel “Ulysses.” “It was recommended to me by Peter Krilov. I agreed, because I was the most afraid to approach this text, ”Mary shuddered when she remembered it.
The play “Molly Says Yes!” (2014) performed by Bērziņa as a gorgeous monologue by the famous writer’s wife Molly, directed by Pēteris Krilovs and performed by the actress herself. “Mary jumped higher than herself,” comments the director, while the “Players’ Night” jury nominates Mary again.
That, of course, is gratifying. Prizes, like good words, make you believe in yourself. Because no matter how we like it, we all depend on other people’s judgment. Unfortunately. A good word and encouragement is often the motive for a new thought, or even a life’s task in general.
“What will surprise you? “In fact, this is not my question, but the question of the former director of the Youth Theater, Adolf Shapiro (now working in Russia – ed.), Which he has asked not many young artists,” Marija Bērziņa describes the historical context of her current motto. “In any case, I always keep this issue in mind. For mental hygiene. ”
One of the surprises of recent years is the second education. Namely, the actress has obtained a diploma in dramatic theater directing (2018, diploma thesis show “Anatomy of Marriage and Divorce”).
“Currently, I am not only an actress, but also a teacher of acting at the Academy of Music. And I’m pretty sure I’ll learn another profession in my life, ”laughs the determined artist.
